So, it's been awhile - a lot going on!! Starting with Hampton, VA - this is across the bay from Norfolk and our first stop at the Chesapeake ( it is right at the mouth of the Bay). We spent 5 days here resting up and enjoying the town. We decided it was about a draw for Alan to fly down to Jekyll to get the truck as opposed to renting a car for a 9 hr trip each way. He left at 8:30 am and got back at 2:30 the next am - drove in some terrible rain. I was stuck on the boat the entire time as the finger dock was too short for me to get off with either dog without assistance. The following day we drove to the Deltaville area to check it out as we had decided this is where we wanted to be. We checked out a couple of marinas and made a decision. They both had covered slips and similar amenities but we chose the one with the wider, better docks. We decided on a covered slip as it can get REALLY HOT here in the summer so that should keep the boat cooler and the protection will extend the life of the canvas biminy, enclosure and Isenglass (windows in the canvas).
We plan to leave her here over the winter so she will be protected from the snow/ice should they have some. They did this past winter!!! Again, we lucked out with a more 'rural" setting. Deltaville is about 800 people in the winter and grows during the summer. No stop light, 1 grocery a couple of restaurants and misc small services. Howver there are abut 6-8 boatyards in the immediate area. The be the place to ha;ve work done on your boat!! The closest biggish town is Gloucester, about 25 min away - they of course have a Walmart!! The "big " cities of Hampton, Norfolk and Newport News are about 1 1/2 hrs away tho it is only about 60-75 miles = lots of traffic!! Richmond is also about 1 1/2 hrs, The marina is relatively small with beautiful facilities and a small pool. The only thing we don't have is a place to bike or hike. The roads are all pretty narrow and windey - too risky!! The boat yard we have selected is right next door - we could almost push the boat over there!! The fellow came over the other day to discuss some of the issues we have and they will do the work when we are back in Colo end July/beginning of Aug. Four days after we arrived I flew to Minn as daughter Molly had surgery and has two little ones under 6 - she needed help!! No worries - she is fine!! I was there a week and have now only been back here a week, so I am still gettting oriented. Alan stayed behind with the boys. There are two other couples on our dock who have become good friends and they 'took care" of Alan while I was away :)
A couple days after I got back we drove to Hampton for the day as they have a beautiful park with a 5 mi hike around the lake. The boys are really missing their long walks so we had a great time! After that we went to--------COSTCO!!!!!!! It had been months since I had been to one and it is rediculous how excited I was - need to get out more!! Also found a market right next door that is very similar to Whole Foods, so my day was complete!! We have since made a trip to Gloucester for some perishables and to have the truck checked out. Left the boys at home and had a nice day exploring this little town - found a store that sells gluten-free beer and raw honey. Again - success!! Alan has signed on with a friend from Jekyll to crew on his sailboat around June 18. He brought it up to a boatyard here and then returned to upper New York where hr spends his summers. He will be back down here the 17 to pick up his boat. It is 44 ft and he needs crew. They will sail it back up to Sodus Point, NY which is on Lake Ontario. It will be about a week to 10 day trip, into New York, up the Hudson, thru the Erie Canal. This is the route we will be taking when we leave the Bay, so it will really be informational as well as a great time!! I will "man" the boat while he is gone - with the help of the boys - yikes!!!! It is nice to be in one place for awhile and take time to smell the roses. There is so much to see and do around this area - our time here will be full!!
